Risk in Getting Your Credit Report Online

When you purchase anything on credit, it means that you get the product or service first and you pay for it only later. The reason a vendor allows a customer to buy anything on credit is because he is assured that he will be paid for it. So, basically when a person buys anything on credit, he is actually building up his reputation of being creditworthy, especially if the person is prompt in making all his payments. When a person is creditworthy, lenders are willing to give him loans at reasonable interest rates as they are assured that the person will pay the amount back.

All this information about a person's credit can be gathered from his credit history which is maintained by different credit bureaus. These bureaus are independent agencies that collect all information on people's credit from different sources like banks, financial institutes, credit card companies, and shops. Each time a person applies for a loan or credit card, the relevant company first checks th e person's credit history. This report will give the lender or credit card company details about the person, including his date of birth, Social Security number, his current address, his current place of employment, his marital status, the name of the spouse and so on. In addition, there will be details about the person's bank accounts, loans, and any other information that is available publicly like bankruptcy or not paying taxes.

Just like a lender, you too can get your credit report for free once a year from any or all the three main credit bureaus -- TransUnion, Experian and Equifax. However, instead of getting your credit report online, you should always ask for physical copy as there are certain risks associated with getting your credit report online.

There are many websites that have similar names and some of these are actually fraudulent sites that are out to scam people. These sites have names that are similar to the credit bureaus and if the person does not type the website address correctly, he can easily go to one of t hese scam sites.

Today, thanks to email, there are a lot of unsolicited emails that a person receives. Many of these emails are phishing emails that look as though they are sent by the original website when in reality they are not. Here the person is asked to enter his user ID and password. These are harvested and then misused by the scam sites. So, a person should be wary of entering his personal details in site other than that of the credit bureau. Also, a person should beware of any offers to get free credit report.

If you are ordering your credit report online, you should not use a public computer. These computers may not have adequate protection and make you vulnerable. Also, by using a public computer, anyone else can easily check out your information by peeking over your shoulder. So, always use your own computer in the privacy of your home. Above all, never store your passwords and personal information on your computer. If your computer gets hacked, then t he hacker will have access to all your confidential information.

While there are risks associated with getting your credit report online, if you use proper precautions, you will have nothing to worry about.
