Congratulations! You've made the decision to fix your credit score.

Now what?

I believe that fixing your score begins with your credit report. By looking at where you are now, you will be able to get an idea of what needs to be done to get your credit to where you would like it to be.

Request A Copy

You are entitled by law to receive one free copy of your credit report per year from each of the three major credit bureaus...Equifax, TransUnion, and Experian.

You can request your copy by mail, phone, or through their online sites. There are also a number of other websites that will allow you to download a copy of your report...but their links ultimately just forward you to one of the above agencies.

What ever way you choose, the main thing is to get started and request your report in order to find out what you may need to work on to fix your credit score.

Your Credit Report

This is the record kept by the va rious credit bureaus that lists all of your accounts and debts, along with your repayment history.

A credit report is usually divided into four sections: identifying information, credit history, public records and inquiries.

Identifying information: The information in this section such as your name, address, social security number, and employer is used to verify your identity.

Credit history: Each account listed will generally include the name of the creditor, when you first opened the account, the type of account (installment or revolving), your credit limit, your current balance, and how well you have made your payments.

Public records: This section includes items such as bankruptcies, collections, court decisions, lawsuits, etc.

Inquiries: Whenever you make an application for credit, the creditor will check your file which will show up as an inquiry on your report.

The main items that creditors look at are th e types of accounts that you have, your total amount of debt, and how well you have been repaying your debts such as on time, 30 days late, etc.

You want to make sure that you appear to be a good credit risk by having this information presented in the best possible way.

Dispute Any Mistakes

Since your credit score is based on your credit report, having your account information accurately reported is one of the keys to a higher score. If you should find any mistakes in your information, you need to dispute them with the credit bureau that is responsible for the report.

Your goal here is to remove as many negative items from your report as possible, while making sure that your good credit items are being reported properly.

Making sure that the information contained in your credit report is accurate is just one of many great credit repair tips that can be used to fix your credit score.

With credit requirements being stricter today, it's important that you do whatever you can to take care of your credit report and score. The higher your score, the higher your chances of being approved for that new home or car that you need.
